Guest speaker Lee Wellard, a physiology instructor at the College of Health Evangelism at Wildwood Institute in GA, focused on the importance of lifestyle changes: “Americans spend their first 40 years of life using health to get wealth, then the next 40 years using wealth to regain their health.”
He emphasized the spiritual component of health as most critical, “If God has our hearts, everything else will fall into place.”
He explained NEWSTART®, the 8 natural laws of good health—Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, Rest and Trust in God. These methods also form the foundation of Advent Home’s successful Maturation Therapy® Program. On Sunday, Lee concluded with the importance of self-control and faith in God’s Word to overcome bad health habits.
Friday evening got off to a nostalgic start as Dr. Blondel Senior reviewed the history of Advent Home. He spoke emotionally of the Bible promise his mother had given him when he was young—Deuteronomy 31:8, and how it has sustained him through his life.
Leesa Hampton told how she had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and a goiter and told by doctors she needed radiation therapy or surgery. Wanting to use natural remedies, she went on a 2-month juicing/detoxing program and lost 52 pounds. “The boys were my biggest cheerleaders and people were praying,” she said. Her follow-up exam revealed no overactive thyroid, no goiter, and no need for radiation or surgery.
On Sabbath afternoon, families, students and staff went walking and toured the AH farm and greenhouses.
The weekend featured enjoyable music. Ricardo and Delly Reid sang He Didn’t Throw the Clay Away, accompanied on piano by Nnamudi.
Our AH chorale, led by Sharon Johnson, with pianist Heather James, sang Lead Me Lord and How Great the Father’s Love for Us.
Jaron told his life story, how he was “court ordered” to AH. Nine months later, he had finished high school online and was designated junior staff. “Advent home is a place of second chances,” he said. Expressing thanks to his family, he stated, “God brought me through a lot. Even when I wanted nothing to do with Him, He was still there. I am by no means perfect, but God is continually helping me to grow.”
During parent testimonies, Carolyn Paden recommended the AH fund raising packet to help pay expenses. “Month by month, God has provided,” she said. After writing letters, she and her husband raised $22,000 of their son’s tuition.
Israel Ramos, founder and former President of Generation of Youth for Christ (GYC), conducted Advent Home’s second Week of Prayer for 2012.
Students listened attentively and were obviously impressed with Ramos’ warm, down to earth presentations about “Encounters with Christ.”
Justin, one of Advent Home’s Group Leaders, saw a difference during this Week of Prayer. “People were praying a lot and getting along with each other,” he noted. Another Group Leader, Luke P., commented, “Pastor Ramos’ sermons were inspiring and interesting.”
Both students liked Pr. Ramos’ style and, as a result of participating in the Week of Prayer, decided to make spiritual changes in their lives. “He was so open with us and could relate to us,” said Justin. “I made the commitment to be the best I can be, while still serving God.” Luke commented, “I determined to seek God, instead of just taking His presence for granted.”
Please pray for the spiritual growth of all the Advent Home students; it is a daily struggle for them.
Advent Home’s farm and garden are growing by leaps and bounds. With five greenhouses, plans are underway to grow nutritious, fresh produce year round for students, staff, and eventually, the community.
There are also possibilities for commercial production and AH is currently seeking organic certification for its produce. So far, students and staff have enjoyed a variety of vegetables, including broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, cabbage, collard greens, cucumbers, lettuce, eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and more!
Perhaps, the best benefit of all is for AH students. “Students should be given a practical education in agriculture. This will be of inestimable value to many in their future work.” (Counsel to Parents, Teachers, Students, 311)
